When most visitors think about Maui maternity photo locations, they imagine sunset on the beach.
If you are a beach kind of gal (or guy), here is my guide to Best Beaches For Maui Maternity Photos.
Still, while Maui’s beaches are beautiful, for my own maternity photos I chose a different setting. After years of photographing maternity sessions across the island, I know some of my favorite spots are actually away from the shoreline.

Rainforest valleys, volcanic coastlines, green mountain ridges, and tropical flower gardens all offer completely different scenery, and often much more privacy than the resort beaches.
These are some of the places I love recommending to couples who want something unique, scenic, and unforgettable for their babymoon photos.
Quick Guide: Non-Beach Maui Maternity Photo Locations
If you’re searching for maternity photo locations beyond the beach, these areas offer some of the most beautiful landscapes on Maui…
- Honolua Bay rainforest: lush tropical jungle with vines and dramatic greenery
- La Pérouse Bay: black lava rock and bright turquoise ocean
- Haleakalā summit: volcanic landscapes above the clouds
- ʻĪao Valley stream: green mountains and peaceful flowing water
- Waiheʻe Ridge Trail: sweeping views into the West Maui Mountains
- Maui Flower Farms: from tropical colorful blooms to romantic lavender fields
- Upcountry Maui slopes: rolling green countryside and pastoral scenery
- Rocky Coastlines: dramatic, rugged stone landscape above dark blue, wild ocean
Each location creates a completely different atmosphere for maternity photos.
Honolua Bay Rainforest
This spot holds a special place in my heart. I chose it for my own maternity photos because the lush surroundings feel like such a beautiful symbol of new life.

You step out of the car and immediately into the jungle. You’re between towering tropical trees, twisting roots, and hanging vines. There are even tropical fruit trees along the path. It’s a place that feels full of abundance.
Sunlight filters through the canopy above, creating soft, diffused light that photographs beautifully.
This is one of my favorite Maui maternity photo locations for couples who want images that feel dramatic, tropical, and editorial.
Best for
- Tropical rainforest scenery
- Dramatic greenery and texture
- Easy access from West Maui resorts
La Pérouse Bay (Black Lava & Turquoise Water)
Jet-black lava rocks against a striking turquoise ocean crashing against the shore, that’s what you get at La Pérouse Bay. And if you’re lucky, you might spot a dolphin jumping offshore or a wild black goat roaming over the rocks.

It’s rugged and wild.
My favorite time of day to photograph here is sunset, when the warm light softens the starkness of the landscape.
The coastline itself was formed by one of Maui’s most recent lava flows.
Because the scenery is so dramatic, simple styling works best. Think flowing neutral fabrics that allow the landscape to stand out.
Best for
- Dramatic volcanic scenery
- High-contrast imagery
- Couples looking for a bold setting
Haleakalā Summit
For couples looking for something truly unforgettable during their Maui babymoon.
The challenge here isn’t the climb. It’s the altitude. Many of the most stunning viewpoints are just a short walk from the summit parking areas, which are flat and paved.

However, the elevation can make you feel a little lightheaded or out of breath. Maybe I’m a bit of a wimp, but this wasn’t for me during pregnancy either. Still, many expecting mothers feel perfectly fine visiting the summit briefly. It’s always wise to check with your doctor before spending time at high elevation during pregnancy.
When conditions are right, the views are extraordinary: clouds below you and vast volcanic terrain stretching across miles of red cinder cones.
Personally, I prefer photographing here at sunset. That way we don’t need the sunrise reservation, we don’t have to wake up at an ungodly hour, and we avoid the coldest part of the day. In my view, sunset is just as beautiful as sunrise.
The result can be maternity photos that feel epic and once-in-a-lifetime.
Best for
- Dramatic volcanic scenery
- Adventurous couples
- Sunset above the clouds
ʻĪao Valley Stream
ʻĪao Valley is another option for Maui maternity photos that feels completely different from beach sessions. Steep emerald cliffs and dense rainforest surround the valley, making everything feel deep green and alive.

A cold mountain stream flows through the valley over smooth river rocks. For maternity photos, this stream can become part of the scene.
A quick note though: the water here is cold. Truly cold. We actually come here to cold plunge sometimes. During my pregnancy I liked putting my ankles in the water, but it’s something to be aware of.
Conditions also change with nature. Sometimes the stream runs low, and sometimes heavy rain brings much higher water levels.
I usually photograph here in the morning when cloud cover is lighter. By afternoon the clouds often build up, and this is one of the wettest spots on Maui.
Best for
- Lush mountain scenery
- Couples who love nature
- Peaceful, nature-focused maternity photos
Waiheʻe Ridge Trail (West Maui Mountain Views)
This one is for the adventurous mamas-to-be. The initial climb is a bit steep. It’s even, paved ground, but I’ll usually break a little sweat.

Personally, this wouldn’t have been the spot for my own maternity photos. But I have friends who ran marathons while pregnant, and if you’re a fit, adventurous mama, this trail will reward you with incredible views and backdrops.
When clouds drift through the green gulch valleys of the West Maui Mountains below, the scenery can feel almost surreal, like a peek into Jurassic Park.
Best for
- Panoramic mountain scenery
- Adventurous couples
- Dramatic green landscapes
Maui Flower Farms and Botanical Gardens
If you’re looking for romantic and dreamy Maui maternity photography but don’t want beach photos, I often recommend the island’s flower farms and botanical gardens.
I’ve visited all of these farms and photographed sessions at many of them. The cool air is a nice escape.

One of the wonderful things about Maui is that something is always in bloom! In the summer there are fragrant plumeria gardens, orchids bloom throughout the year, and lavender fields on the slopes of Haleakalā come into bloom several times.
There are also protea farms and botanical gardens full of beautiful surprises like rainbow eucalyptus trees. We even have sunflower fields with ocean views!
These locations create a very different feeling from the beach or the jungle. The atmosphere is softer and more romantic. Here, you would be walking through rows of flowers, gathering blooms from the ground, or standing beneath flowering trees, perhaps wearing a lei or flower crown made from the blossoms around you.
Best for
- Soft, romantic maternity imagery
- Couples who love flowers and gardens
- Colorful settings that feel joyful and natural
Upcountry Maui Rolling Hills & Pastures
I’m generally a little baffled by Maui’s many unique looks and microclimates, but this one might be the most surprising. Drive a bit Upcountry and slightly east (not too far or you’ll end up on the sketchy back road to Hāna), and suddenly the landscape changes.
Rolling green pastureland stretches across the hills.

It looks like Scotland!
This setting creates maternity photos that feel country, down-to-earth, and quiet with world-class ocean views! It’s a completely different mood from beaches, jungles, or tropical flower farms.
Natural fabrics and earthy tones photograph beautifully here, blending into the pastoral landscape.
Best for
- Couples staying near Makawao or Kula
- Soft countryside scenery
- Romantic pastoral imagery
ROCKY COASTLINES (WEST MAUI & NORTH SHORE)
In some parts of Maui, the shoreline isn’t sand at all but dramatic, sculptural rock formations rising above the ocean. One of the most famous examples is the Dragon’s Teeth on the west side, where jagged limestone ridges point toward the sky while deep blue waves crash below.

It feels wild and powerful.
Because the scenery can feel harsh and rugged, I recommend softer wardrobe styling. Flowing fabrics and light colors create a beautiful contrast against the rocks and intense ocean.
I’m always very careful photographing along this type of coastline. The ocean along rocky coastlines can be unpredictable, so I only photograph in stable areas well away from cliffs and waves, especially for maternity sessions. Places like Nakalele Blowhole are not locations I would ever use for a photo session due to the steep terrain and unpredictable ocean conditions.
Best for
- Dramatic coastal scenery
- High-contrast imagery
- Bold, editorial-style maternity photos
Choosing the Right Maui Maternity Photo Location
One of the beautiful things about Maui is how many different landscapes the island offers. Each Maui maternity photo location has its own atmosphere and feeling.
Some couples love the softness of a beach at sunset. Others feel drawn to rainforest valleys, volcanic coastlines, or sweeping mountain views.
The most important thing is choosing a location that fits your personality, comfort level, and the kind of experience you want during your babymoon.
Part of my role as a Maui maternity photographer is helping families choose Maui maternity photo locations that are beautiful, relaxed, and uncrowded, so the experience itself feels just as special as the photos.
Maui Maternity Photo Locations – FAQ
Yes, professional photography in Hawaii state parks and many public locations requires a permit. As your photographer, I handle the permitting process when it’s required so you don’t have to worry about the logistics.
Not everywhere. Some areas require permits, some are culturally sensitive places where photography is discouraged, some are private property that we can’t trespass on, and some locations are just not safe for photos.
Part of my job is helping couples choose Maui maternity photo locations that are beautiful, accessible, and appropriate for photography.
In general, yes. Maui is a very welcoming place, especially when visitors are respectful of the land and community.
That means staying on established paths, respecting private property, and being mindful of culturally important places. When sessions are done thoughtfully, we never have any issues.
Yes. Some places that look dramatic in photos can actually be risky.
For example, I don’t photograph maternity sessions at places like Red Sand Beach, the Nakalele Blowhole, or exposed rocky outcrops with strong surf. These areas can be dangerous, especially during pregnancy.
There are so many beautiful locations on Maui that we can choose stunning backdrops without putting anyone at risk.
Maui’s landscapes are very dynamic. Streams can rise quickly after rain, certain valleys can experience flash flooding, and ocean conditions can change with tides and swell.
Before every session I keep an eye on weather forecasts and ocean conditions so we choose locations that are safe that day.
Usually yes. Many of the most beautiful Maui maternity photo locations (beaches and non-beach locations) are outside of the main resort areas, so having a rental car gives us flexibility to reach quieter and more scenic places.
That said, there are also wonderful locations close to the Wailea, Kapalua, and Kāʻanapali resorts.
Most of the locations I recommend are accessible with short walks. Some places involve uneven ground or light hiking, but I always talk through options with couples beforehand so we choose something comfortable.
Maternity sessions should feel relaxed and enjoyable, not like a workout.
Some popular beaches and tourist spots can be busy, especially around sunset.
One of the advantages of working with an experienced, local photographer is knowing which Maui maternity photo locations tend to stay quieter and what time of day they photograph best. Many of the locations I recommend are chosen specifically because they feel peaceful and uncrowded.
Beach locations near Wailea, Kapalua, and Kāʻanapali are still the most popular choice for Maui maternity photos, especially at sunset. After the beach, the Honolua Bay rainforest is probably the second most popular location.
Maui’s weather can change quickly, especially in mountain and rainforest areas. If rain is in the forecast, I always keep an eye on weather patterns and we can adjust the location if needed.
One of the nice things about Maui is that different parts of the island have very different weather. If one area is rainy, another part of the island may be sunny.
Yes. While many resort areas are right on the beach, there are still some beautiful non-beach options nearby. For example, the Honolua rainforest is a short drive from Kapalua and Kāʻanapali, and some Upcountry landscapes are about 30–40 minutes from Wailea. Botanical gardens and flower farms can also be good options depending on where you’re staying.
