ISLAND SESSIONS & STORIES

One thing I love about living and raising kids on Maui is how easy it is to eat healthy food here. We grown veggies and fruit year-round and many restaurants serve fish that was caught that same day. Hawaiʻi has the longest life expectancy in the United States. People here live about four years longer on average.

In any case, there’s a strong wellness culture on the island. Among friends and neighbors, it seems like everyone has their own way of eating: keto, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, kosher, Blue Zones-inspired whole foods. As a result restaurants are very used to accommodating different diets, and menus are usually clearly labeled.

If you’re visiting Maui on a babymoon, you might not be eating raw fish and also might be thinking a little more carefully about what you’re eating when you’re out and about. I know friends who dealt with gestational diabetes and needed to find meals that were well-balanced and still delicious

The places below are what I find to be Maui’s healthiest and most enjoyable food spots. These aren’t fancy sit-down restaurants. They’re the kinds of places that are perfect for a casual lunch, something fresh after a morning at the beach, or an easy takeout dinner.

At A Glance: Best healthy casual food on Maui

  • Alive & Well — Mac Crack bowl or mushroom congee
  • Choice Health Bar — Buddha bowl with golden rice
  • Fork & Salad — Paniolo salad or Smoky Papaya Chicken sandwich
  • 62 MarcKet — Mediterranean wrap with roasted vegetables and feta
  • Okoa Farms — fresh produce, prepared bowls, and tropical fruits
  • Ocean Vodka Café — sunset dinners with vegetable summer rolls and chicken salad
  • Seascape — Tahitian Kampachi Ceviche and taro burger
  • Moku Roots — plant-based farm-to-table meals and healthy celebration cakes

Alive & Well

We usually come here for lunch or dinner to get the Mac Crack Bowl with quinoa or the mushroom congee with a 6-minute egg. The Mac Crack has breaded local catch, pickles, and vegetables and tastes great while still feeling pretty light.

Most of the time we take it to go and bring it to Airport Beach to watch the wind-surfers.

Just note their hours are 8-5pm, so close early.

They also offer breakfast. They have fresh pressed juices, smoothies, and even juice cleanses, plus things like healthy breakfast burritos with roasted vegetables, acai bowls, and fresh coconut water or coconut milk. You can order online ahead of time.

The prepared food section is called Broth Café.

Alive & Well itself is mainly a natural health food store, with lots of supplements, specialty health foods, and even filtered water stations (including Kangen water). It’s a little woo-woo, but also kind of fun in a very Maui way.

Fork & Salad

This is probably my favorite salad place on Maui, and one of my favorite salad places anywhere.

You can build your own salad, but their house combinations are excellent. We especially love the Paniolo Salad with bacon, purple sweet potatoes, kimchi broccoli, and their cilantro–smoked chili vinaigrette. It’s one of those salads that actually feels like a full meal.

They also make great sandwiches that are basically salads on bread. Two favorites are the Smoky Papaya Chicken with mango hot sauce, goat cheese, bacon, papaya, spring mix, and their cilantro-smoked chili dressing, and the Eggplant & Goat Cheese sandwich.

Their lamb chili is also very good.

One thing I really appreciate about Fork & Salad is that they source produce from about 20 Hawai‘i farms, so you’re eating fresh local ingredients while supporting island food producers.

There are locations in Kīhei, Kahului, and Lahaina.

Choice Health Bar

We usually get the burrito or the Buddha bowl, both with their golden rice, which is really flavorful and makes the whole thing satisfying. Even my daughter loves it.

Choice Health Bar is mostly vegan and vegetarian, with lots of smoothies, açaí bowls for breakfast, and options for juice cleanses. They also have different loaded coffee drinks if you want something a little more substantial than a regular coffee.

There’s a location in Pāʻia, and a new one opening in Wailea, which will make it even easier to grab something healthy if you’re staying on the south side.

It’s a great stop when you want something fresh, full of veggies, and still filling.

Sixty Two MarcKet

I discovered this place during jury duty and ended up coming here almost every day for two weeks.

My favorite will always be their Mediterranean wrap with roasted vegetables, feta, and roasted eggplant. They also make very good salads and usually have creative appetizers on the menu.

The menu changes every 4–6 weeks, depending on what’s in season, and it’s always full of very fresh local foods that taste clean, healthy, and delicious.

They also have some great indulgences. Their sweet treats like the bubble waffle and French toast are excellent.

I’ll be honest, their coffee drinks are not very good, so I usually stick to tea.

Overall it’s a great spot for brunch, and a nice place to find fresh, local food that still feels a little special.

Okoa Farms

I’m here almost every Saturday morning, and often a few times during the week, picking up different things, usually produce to cook with at home.

They have exotic tropical fruits you have never even heard of, like peanut fruit, miracle berries, rambutan, jaboticaba, and sapodilla, alongside favorites like lychee, guava, dragonfruit, and mango.

And yes, they have a freezer full of different kinds of durian, which is basically the ultimate fruit dare.

In addition to fresh produce, they sell prepared foods made from their farm ingredients. You’ll find things like cassava or sweet potato breakfast bowls, hearty soups, salad bowls, fruit popsicles, and even desserts like chocolate avocado mousse pudding.

They also stock products from other local food producers, like goat cheeses, sourdough bread, and one of our favorites moringa pesto.

They also offer farm tours, which are a really great way to learn more about tropical agriculture and food security on Maui. Hawaiʻi still imports about 90% of its food. Crazy, right? If you’re interested, I wrote more about it in my post on Best Farm Tours on Maui.

Ocean Vodka Café

This one might be surprising on a list of the best healthy food on Maui, since it’s technically a distillery restaurant. But the food here is so fresh and full of healthy produce that it really deserves a place on this list.

When we’re craving a sunset spot to sit, watch the sun go down over the ocean, listen to live music, and eat a healthy meal, this is where we go.

We love the vegetable summer rolls, the chicken salad, and the farm breads.

And the banana pops are the perfect healthy sweet treat: apple bananas dipped in dark chocolate with macadamia nut brittle.

If you’re on a babymoon and not drinking alcohol — or just trying to eat well — their mocktails are delicious too.

Seascape Maʻalaea Restaurant

Our whole family loves to come here. t’s a little unexpected too, because it’s part of the Maui Ocean Center, and you might assume it’s more of a kid restaurant with not-so-great food. But actually, the food here is excellent.

Seascape is a great place for healthy, delicious food, and it also has a beautiful ocean view.

They cook with a lot of hyper-local ingredients, and you can really taste the freshness. Some of our favorites are the ʻulu hummus, the Tahitian-style kampachi ceviche, the local fish and chips, and the taro burger, which surprised me, because I don’t usually like veggie burgers.

The only thing I’ve had here that I didn’t love was the pork belly bowl.

The restaurant is very locally focused, using fresh fish from Māʻalaea Harbor fishermen, grass-fed protein from island ranches, and canoe crops from local farmers.

One tip: make reservations, and be aware that the entrance can be a little hidden the first time you visit.

Moku Roots

We went a couple times when it was still in Lahaina. I haven’t been since it moved Upcountry yet, but I’m excited to try their brunch and sunset dinners.

What I remember most is how thoughtful everything felt. They’re very farm-to-table, plant-based, and committed to zero-waste packaging, so even the takeout used to be wrapped in banana or ti leaves.

The new brunch and sunset dinner menus look delicious, with vegan and gluten-free dishes that still look really satisfying and flavorful.

It’s one of the places on Maui where healthy food still feels like a treat.

I’ll update this once I’ve visited the new location.

They also make custom cakes that are so beautiful but still healthy. Think colorful sunset or rainbow cakes decorated with fresh fruit and flowers, all colored naturally with no food dyes.

If you’re planning something like a birthday or a smash cake on Maui but don’t want to sacrifice on health or ingredients, this is the place to look.

Healthy Eating at Sit-Down Restaurants on Maui

Healthy bowl of fresh fish and fruit with lychee on Maui

Because Maui has strong Pacific Island and Hawaiian food traditions, and because we have such easy access to fresh seafood and produce, it’s actually pretty easy to eat healthy at the island’s nicer sit-down restaurants as well.

Of course there’s lots of fresh poke and sushi, but maybe you’re on a Maui babymoon and skipping raw fish. Fortunately most restaurants also offer cooked seafood, vegetable-heavy dishes, and balanced meals built around local ingredients.

Here are a few of my favorite healthier dishes at Maui’s sit-down restaurants:

  • Casanova Italian Restaurant — Free-Range Chicken Piccata
  • Lineage — Wagyu Strip Loin With Bone Marrow
  • Haliʻimaile General Store — Macadamia Nut Crusted Mahi Mahi
  • Mama’s Fish House — Mahi Mahi, Opah, and Ahi in Panang Curry
  • Kāʻana Kitchen — Local Clams
  • Monekypod — House-made Gnocchi
  • Cafe O’Lei At The Plantation — Szechuan Eggplant & Tofu
  • Star Noodle – Miso Butterfish & Pohole Salad

FAQ About Healthy Food On Maui

Which local fish Hawaii is lowest in mercury?

I worried about mercury in Ahi (Tuna) during pregnancy. According to the Hawaii Department of Health, safer alternatives are mahi mahi (once a week) or Opakapaka (Pink Snapper) or akule, aka, moi, opelu, squid, octopus, or scallops. Of course, this is not medical advice. Consult your OBGYN for detailed information.

Are juices on Hawaii pasteurized?

It’s hard to know sometimes because they aren’t all labeled, but from my personal experience most “fresh-squeezed” juices at smaller stands are unpasteurized. For a safer bet, I looked for bottled local juices at Hawaiian Moons or Mana Foods that explicitly say that they are pasteurized.

Where to get ‘healthy’ shave ice?

Since standard shave ice is mostly corn syrup. However Ululani’s is my favorite for natural shave ice because the make their syrups from can sugar and with real fruit juices. It’s also the most tasty in my view. So win win.

Can I eat the poke if I’m pregnant?

While poke is raw fish which is usually a “no,” many Maui spots like Foodland or Tamura’s offer “California Poke” (imitation crab), cucumber poke, or tofu poke. Som”e restaurants can also do seared ahi, where they will cook the fish fully if you ask. Not quite the same, but close.

Is Maui tap water safe to drink?

Yes, tap water on Maui is generally safe to drink and meets U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) drinking water standards. That said, during my pregnancy I personally preferred drinking filtered water and using filtered water for my baby. Twice, the water department sent me notices in the mail about things like missed testing windows or monitoring updates. These notices don’t necessarily mean the water is unsafe, but seeing them made me personally more comfortable using a filter.

Where can you buy organic and health foods on Maui?

My favorite organic and health food stores on Maui are…
Down to Earth Organic & Natural (Kahului) – One of the largest selections of organic groceries, bulk foods, and prepared vegetarian meals on the island.
Mana Foods (Paia) – A beloved North Shore market known for local produce, organic groceries, and ready-to-eat foods.
Alive & Well (Kahului) – Popular for vitamins, supplements, and health products, plus a small organic grocery section.
Most major grocery stores on Maui also carry organic products and locally grown produce.
Okoa Farms Farm Stand (Pukalani) – A small local farm stand known for organically grown produce, tropical fruit, and beautiful farm views. It’s a great place to pick up fresh ingredients grown right on Maui.

Are farmers markets on Maui worth visiting?

It depends on the market. Some places labeled “farmers markets” are really just roadside stands selling smoothies, juices, or packaged items at tourist prices. I’ve even seen guava cheesecake being resold that clearly came from Costco. Those places can still be fun to stop at, but they’re not always the best to experience Maui’s local fruits. The great markets are the ones where farmers are actually selling what they grow. A few of my favorites are the Upcountry Farmers Market in Kula on Saturday mornings, which has a large selection of local produce and prepared foods, and small farm stands like Okoa Farms and Yee’s Mango Farm Stand in Kihei, where you can often buy fruit picked the same day. If you’re interested in finding the best places, I’ve put together a full guide to Maui’s best farmers markets and farm stands with locations, days, and what each one is known for.

Healthy Eating on Maui Is Easier Than You Think

I hope this list shows that eating delicious, healthy food on Maui is absolutely possible. There are so many places where you can enjoy meals that are fresh and well-balanced without missing out on local flavors.

What’s also nice is that the whole family can enjoy these spots. The foods my husband and kids love don’t feel like “diet food,” so no one feels like they’re missing out, whether you’re eating this way because of gestational diabetes, health reasons, or just personal preference.

I hope you enjoy Maui’s culinary beauty and food culture.

Have the best babymoon or family adventure!
