As a Maui maternity photographer who photographs beach sessions across the island, I find that this is one of the most compelling locations on the island. It’s not the soft, romantic Maui beach maternity shoot that most imagine, but for this mama it was perfect.
Black sand underfoot. Red cinder cone behind her. Bright turquoise water cutting through everything. There’s nothing muted about this landscape and look. This was about the strength and power. It felt fierce, strong, and beautiful.

Why Oneuli Is Perfect For Black Sand Beach Maternity Photos
For those specifically seeking a black sand beach look without the logistics of Hana, Oneuli is one of the few locations that delivers.
The sand is black. The cliffs behind it come from a red cinder cone. Just down the coastline, La Perouse Bay contains Maui’s most recent lava flow, which gives this entire area its raw, volcanic character.
Visually, it creates a color palette that’s hard to find anywhere else on the island: black, red, turquoise, and gold at sunset. And for babymoon couples staying in South Maui, that makes it much easier to build a session around sunset without turning it into an overnight outing.
So, it’s very close to all the resorts, has easy parking access, and is just stunningly beautiful and different.
Photographing Black Sand On Maui (Why It’s Different)
Black sand beaches photograph very differently than the lighter sand most people picture on Maui. On white or golden sand beaches, the ground naturally reflects light. It lifts the skin tones, softens shadows, and adds warmth without much effort.
Here, it’s the opposite.
The black sand absorbs light instead of reflecting it. The tones can easily go flat or muddy, and skin can lose that natural glow if everything isn’t balanced carefully. That affects everything, from how I shoot to how I style.
Wardrobe becomes more important. Colors need to hold their own against the darker tones. Light has to be used more intentionally, especially as the sun drops. Even small adjustments in exposure can change how the sand reads, whether it feels rich and textured or just dull.
And then there’s editing. Black sand can quickly look gray, washed out, or like dirty sand if it’s not handled carefully. The goal is to keep the depth of the black while still preserving clean, natural skin tones and the clarity of the water. This is one of those locations where everything—light, styling, and editing—must work together.

Styling This Black Sand Beach Maui Maternity Session
Because the setting is so strong, the styling has to meet it in its boldness and drama.
We chose a deep burgundy look to work with the red tones in the cliffs while still standing apart from the black sand. It gave her presence in the frame instead of getting lost in the environment.
The cape and draping were intentional. This part of South Maui is exposed, and the wind is constant. Instead of trying to control it, we used it. The fabric moved and it naturally pulled attention back to her shape and the curve of her belly. The look stayed clean, but every piece of it was working.

The Red Ti Leaf Haku Lei
To finish the look, we added a custom red ti leaf haku lei by Hakuleilani. It was made to match the outfit and the tones of the landscape, which brought everything together immediately. Leilani grows these beautiful ti plants in a range of shades, from green to yellow-striped to deep reds. Here, we chose rich burgundy leaves.
It added even more drama without softening the overall feel of the session. In a setting like this, it needed to hold its own, and it did. It felt strong, structured, and completely aligned with the environment.
It’s a reminder that a lei, even for a mama, doesn’t have to be soft or whimsical. It can be bold, fierce, strong, and beautiful.
Hair And Makeup For Maui Beach Conditions
This mama is a makeup artist and did her own hair and makeup for the session, which really shows in how everything came together and held up!
We kept her hair natural, long, straight, and open.
On a beach like this, wind is part of the environment. The fact that her hair held up so well—open, in wind and humidity—is a testament to her craft and the way she styled it with the right products. Trying to control hair in wind usually doesn’t translate well. Letting it move naturally tends to feel more real. When it works, it gives the images a sense of movement without effort.
Her makeup was polished and glowing, understated, but strong enough not to get washed out against this bold, colorful landscape. A good makeup artist here is practical, not just aesthetic. They understand how everything will work together.
For most clients, I do recommend hiring a professional for this reason. It’s one of those little luxuries that makes the whole experience feel easier and more enjoyable. You get to be taken care of, feel pampered, and trust that everything will hold up beautifully in Maui’s conditions.

A Maui beach maternity session like this gives you time. Space to slow down, to be present, to take it in.
We move along the shoreline as the light changes. No rigid posing, no rushing. I guide when it matters, but I’m not constantly directing. It’s a balance between giving you space and quietly shaping what’s happening.
I’m watching for the small things: a slipped bra strap, a more flattering arm position, how the fabric is falling, where the light is hitting your face. Subtle adjustments that make a difference without interrupting the moment.
At the same time, there’s room to just be in it. Walking, pausing, noticing what’s around you: the coral tucked into the cinder cone, the texture of the sand, the feeling of the water at your feet. Also noticing how far you’ve come in this pregnancy, the amazing things your body is doing, and the joyful, exciting times to come.
As the sun drops lower, everything starts to come together. The black sand deepens, the red cliff warms, and the water brightens against it. From there, it becomes about refining—small adjustments in position, light, and movement to bring everything into balance. It’s the perfect place to experience strength in motherhood.
Why I Chose to Include Black & White Images In This Maui Maternity Session
Before digital, I shot exclusively on film, and black and white was always my favorite, especially the rich tones of Ilford Delta 400, the subtle gradations, and purposeful grain that you can’t quite replicate in digital the same way.
At a location like this, it might seem unexpected to shoot in black and white, because the colors are so beautiful and bold.
But for this session, we built everything to stand up to that boldness, which means that the shape of the dress, the structure of the lei, the contrast of skin against volcanic sand, and the texture of the sand and cliffs themselves are really strong.
Without color, those elements become the focus in a different way. So I chose to include a number of these images in black and white. Not as an afterthought, but as part of how the session was envisioned from the beginning.
