If you’re researching what to wear for Maui maternity photos, the internet will usually have the same generic advice: a flowing maxi dress made of chiffon, silk, or cotton gauze in muted pastel shades.

Or maybe a romantic ruched robe so fluffy you’ll have a hard time fitting it into your carry-on.
And that’s not wrong. Movement does make photos more beautiful, and those colors do look lovely against ocean backdrops.
But it’s also very safe. Very cookie-cutter. The goal isn’t to look like a “maternity photoshoot.”
The goal is to look like yourself — beautifully styled within the landscape. That’s timeless!
The good news is there are so many ways to style a maternity session. It can be modern, minimalist, boho, dramatic, ’60s-inspired, vintage, relaxed, or formal. The colors can be bold. You can even wear animal print. Gasp! (See this Editorial Leopard Jungle Maternity Session.)

As a Maui maternity photographer with a background in fashion styling, helping clients choose outfits that are flattering, natural, and beautiful in the landscape is one of my favorite parts of the process.
So if you’re wondering what to wear for your Maui maternity photos during your babymoon, here are some styling ideas that work beautifully n Maui. The goal isn’t to follow a trend, it’s to choose a direction that feels like it’s expressive of you.
Curious about picking a location for your Maui babymoon photos that isn’t the beach? Take a look at my guide on Best Locations For Maui Maternity Photos (Beyond The Beach).
The First Step in Planning Your Maui Maternity Outfits
Living and photographing here has taught me that Maui isn’t just a pretty backdrop. The island has texture, movement, contrast, and incredibly varied landscapes.
What you wear doesn’t just complement the setting. It works with or against it.
So before we start talking about fabrics, colors, or silhouettes, I usually ask something simpler:
What kind of energy do you want these images to express?
Some maternity sessions feel soft and understated. Others feel bold and editorial.
One feels light, romantic, and classic.

The other feels dramatic, modern, and striking.

Neither is better. They simply tell different stories.
Once that direction is clear, wardrobe decisions become much easier.
If that sounds like a lot to think about, don’t worry. I guide my clients through this process all the time.
Best Outfits for Maui Beach Maternity Photos
Beach maternity photos in Maui are one of the most popular choices for babymoon sessions.
But there are two things visitors don’t always realize…
First, Maui beaches come in many different colors.

Some are very pale and ashen. Others are golden, muddy gray, charcoal, or even terracotta red. Because of that variety, the colors you choose for your outfit should work well with the specific beach you’re photographing on.

Second, Maui beaches are almost always breezy.
The trade winds are part of what makes the island so beautiful, but they also mean fabrics will move. Materials like chiffon, silk, linen, or cotton gauze tend to photograph especially well because they catch the wind naturally.
When styled intentionally, that movement adds softness and energy to the images.

Soft & Romantic Beach Maternity Outfit Ideas
For a romantic, yet effortless look, I suggest fabrics that move naturally in the wind and colors that feel soft against the water and sand.
The Palette: Powder blue, muted aqua, peach, or warm neutrals.
The Textures: Cotton, linen, silk, and chiffon.
Timeless. Relaxed. Confident. Romantic.

Bold & Editorial Beach Maternity Outfit Ideas
While flowing dresses are the gold standard for Maui beach maternity outfits, the ocean carries drama well. If you prefer something more striking, look for more dramatic cuts, wider skirts, or even shimmer.
The Palette: Ombre, gold, silver, or tonal blues that mirror the deep ocean.
The Textures: Tulle, metallic fabrics, sequins, or liquid silk.
Modern. Intentional. Bold.

A Note on Shimmer: Underwater sparkle feels modern and intentional when styled minimally. Think of the flash of a tropical fish rather than a literal mermaid fantasy.
What to Wear for Jungle & Rainforest Maternity Photos in Maui
I am in love with all the lush backdrops Maui has to offer. While I enjoy beach sessions with kids, my favorite maternity sessions happen in the jungle!

There’s something special and symbolic about being surrounded by that much living green when you’re expecting new life. It feels peaceful, almost like the forest itself has a quiet hum.
Take a peek at my own Maui Jungle Maternity Session.
Wardrobe tends to work best in one of two directions here: either something soft and earthy that blends beautifully with the environment but still has enough contrast to stand out, or a bold color or pattern that creates a pop against the deep green foliage.
Soft & Romantic Rainforest Maternity Outfit Ideas
Some of the most elegant rainforest maternity looks use earthy tones that stand out beautifully from the landscape.
The Palette: Light sage green, cream, soft pastels, natural linen tones
The Textures: Silk, linen, cotton gauze
Organic. Intentional. Elevated.

Bold & Editorial Rainforest Maternity Outfit Ideas
If you want more energy against the greenery, lean into color.
The Palette: Tangerine, citrus tones, large tropical florals
The Pattern Option: Refined animal print
Fun. Vibrant. Confident.
I promise if you go this direction, you won’t be able to stop smiling. There’s something about wearing a bold outfit in that out-of-this-world green jungle light that just makes you feel a little badass.

What to Wear for Dramatic Lava Rock & Coastline Maternity Photos
When I compose images in dramatic landscapes like lava shorelines and rocky cliffs, I’m always balancing the intensity of the backdrop with the focus on you.
Naturally the eye can get lost in all the texture and shape of the rocks, so wardrobe choices become especially important here. Your outfit needs to draw attention to you first.

I also think about how windy these areas can be. Many of these coastlines are exposed, and the wind becomes part of the look of the photos.
So the styling question becomes pretty simple:
Do we want to soften the scene?
Or lean fully into the drama?
We can tone it down so the images feel a little gentler, or turn it up and embrace the full strength of the setting.
Both directions can look incredible.
Soft & Understated Lava Rock Maternity Outfit Ideas
If you’d like the images to feel softer, the key is softness in everything: color, fabric, and pattern.
Small to medium floral prints in pastel tones work beautifully here, especially tropical flowers. If we add floral accents, a lei, or flowers in the hair, the look becomes even softer.
The Palette: Small floral prints, pastels, warm ivory
The Textures: Chiffon, silk, cotton gauze
Soft. Tropical. Feminine.

Bold & Editorial Lava Rock Maternity Outfit Ideas
If we decide to go for bold, we commit fully.
The Palette: jewel-tones, like rust, volcanic red, deep teal, olive
The Textures: metallic fabrics like brushed gold and liquid silver
Powerful. Intentional. Confident.

What to Wear for Upcountry Maui Maternity Photos
Upcountry Maui has a completely different feeling from the rest of the island.
Rolling pasture, big skies, bi-coastal ocean views, eucalyptus groves, jacaranda blooms in spring, and the slopes of Haleakalā create a landscape that feels open, quiet, and country.

Because this part of the island is also home to Maui’s paniolo tradition (Hawaiian cowboy culture), vintage ranch styling can feel really natural here.
Soft & Understated Upcountry Maternity Outfit Ideas
Soft fabrics and gentle color palettes feel very natural in these landscapes. Layers also look fitting because evening air can be chilly here.
The Palette: Cream, earth tones, dusty rose, soft sage, small patterns
The Textures: Wool, leather, linen, cotton
Quiet. Pastoral. Timeless.

Bold & Editorial Upcountry Maternity Outfit Ideas
Because the landscape is simpler, structured styling can look especially beautiful here. You can also dial up the cowboy or vintage elements. The key is to keep it refined rather than costume-like.
The Palette: Jewel-tones like emerald, garnet, sapphire, soft charcoal
Silhouettes: Historic mu’u mu’us, prairie dresses, long coats or dusters, tailored jackets
Vintage. Intentional. Country.

Flattering Maternity Silhouettes for Every Body Type
After color and location, you’re probably wondering what cuts look flattering for babymoon photos.
If you’re like me, you might have put off buying maternity clothes for a while, wearing whatever still fits until suddenly one day the only thing that feels comfortable is your partner’s sweatshirt.
That’s completely normal.
Here are a few silhouettes that tend to photograph beautifully during maternity sessions:
- Wrap Dresses — Almost like a robe that you can adjust to your body, which ensures great fit
- A-Line Silhouettes — These create softness and ease while still defining your shape.
- Body-Con Styles — Fitted silhouettes that highlight the natural curves of pregnancy

- Bias-Cut Slip Dresses — The bias cut drapes naturally over the belly
- Drawstring Pants & Wrap Tops — Soft drawstring pants or shorts with a wrap top tied under or above the belly.
- Swimsuit & Robe — A simple swimsuit layered with a lightweight robe or kimono.

One practical tip: beaches with red iron sand can stain light fabrics. If you’re wearing something light-colored, make sure you’re comfortable with that possibility — or choose a different location.
Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel comfortable or doesn’t highlight the features you love, try another option. The best outfit is always the one that feels like you.
Can’t Find the Right Maternity Outfit?
This happens all the time.
Many maternity clothing options are either the same generic flowing dress, or they look thin and cheap and not right for photos.
Want to know a stylist’s secret? You don’t have to shop only for maternity clothes.
Some of the best outfits for maternity photos are actually regular clothing that we adapt.
A-line dresses or robes two sizes up from your usual size can often work beautifully. Depending on the neckline and sleeves, they can easily be pinned in the back to create a flattering shape.
I’ve also bought designer dresses secondhand and cut open the back and pinning it to fit perfectly for the photos!

Body-con dresses can work surprisingly well too. I once sourced a medium dress for a petite client, and it fit her pregnancy curves perfectly.
Sometimes we skip traditional dresses altogether. Several yards of fabric in the right color and texture can draped it into a dress on location!
The key is focusing on fabric, color, and silhouette, not whether the label says “maternity.”
If you’re struggling to find something you love, try looking beyond maternity sections.
Or reach out. I’m always happy to help with styling ideas, and I do offer styling assistance for clients who want extra guidance.
What to Wear Underneath Your Maternity Dress
Maui is famously breezy, and many beautiful moments during a photo session happen while walking, turning, or letting the wind catch your dress.
If you’re wearing something that is flowy, has a slit, becomes sheer when wet, then I recommend wearing a nude maternity bodysuit or fitted shorts underneath.

A well-fitted bra also matters more than most people realize.
During sessions I’m always quietly watching for details — smoothing fabric, checking straps, and making sure everything looks effortless.
But you’ll feel much more confident if everything is secure before we begin.
Confidence shows immediately in posture.
Best Shoes (or Barefoot?) for Maui Maternity Photos
Barefoot on the beach always looks best, and it’s easier to move naturally in the sand.
For rainforest trails or lava rock, choose comfortable sandals, espadrilles, or stable wedges. Brown or beige leather tones photograph beautifully and complement most color palettes.
I almost never recommend heels. Even the most polished gown looks fantastic barefoot on Maui.

Accessories: The Immediate Upgrade
Between the landscape, your connection as a couple, the baby bump, and your outfits themselves, there is already a lot happening visually.
Because of that, I usually recommend keeping accessories simple and minimal.
Jewelry: A few meaningful jewelry pieces are often perfect. Maybe a pair of earrings or a delicate necklace. Too much jewelry can start to compete with everything else going on in the scene.
Sunglasses are usually something I suggest removing unless they’re intentionally part of the styling, like for a vintage look.
Hats can be a really fun accessory. They can be worn, carried, or incorporated into poses, and they photograph beautifully on Maui’s beaches.
Hair and Makeup: I usually suggest professional hair and makeup. Not for the sake of vanity, but because local artists know how to work with the wind. Also, pregnancy can be a time when you don’t always feel your most glamorous, and getting dressed up can be a huge mood boost. That confidence will show in your photos!
Nails: Another small detail that often appears in maternity photos is nails. Natural or neutral tones photograph beautifully, since hands are often resting on the belly.
Flowers: Maui’s Signature Element
If I were coming to Maui for my babymoon, one of my must-do items would be to wear a lei!
Making and wearing tropical, fragrant blooms is such a special experience. The colors are beautiful, the scents are incredible, and Maui has an amazing variety of exotic flowers that can complement almost any outfit.

Pregnancy is also honored in Hawaiian culture, so much so that there is a special type of pregnancy lei called a hāpai lei, which is traditionally open-ended.
So of course my favorite maternity sessions are the ones where we incorporate floral elements into the styling.
I work with incredibly talented local florists who design custom lei specifically for each session. Many of the flowers used are so unique you won’t find them anywhere else.
I even grow certain varieties in my own garden for photo shoots, including tiny baby anthuriums that are unbelievably cute, plumerias with nine petals, and several rare fragrant blooms.

We can incorporate floral details in many ways:
- Hāpai (maternity) lei
- Head lei (haku)
- A single bloom or cluster tucked behind the ear
- Floral installations that become part of the scenery
A delicate jasmine lei feels completely different from bold tropical hibiscus. Both can be beautiful when chosen intentionally.
What Should Dad Wear for a Maui Babymoon Photoshoot?
Earlier in my career photographing weddings, I noticed how often the groom was styled almost like an accessory: just an arm for the bride or a shoulder to lean against. And I never liked that.
That experience shaped how I photograph couples today.
Your Maui babymoon photoshoot isn’t just about the baby bump. The photos should express your connection and partnership.

So while there aren’t quite as many wardrobe decisions when it comes to dressing dad, it’s still important. He should feel grounded, present, and intentional. And comfortable.
Relaxed & Natural
- Linen or cotton button-downs (long or short sleeved)
- Soft neutrals like sand, cream, sage, or pale blue
- Relaxed trousers or crisp shorts
- Barefoot or simple leather sandals
Modern & Dramatic
- Suit pants in stone or grey for balance
- Long-sleeved linen or cotton button-downs
- Deeper tones like espresso, charcoal, or olive
- Tailored trousers or clean dark denim
The goal is simple styling that feels intentional and fits the setting.
Shoes: Barefoot is almost always best for beach sessions. For other locations, simple leather sandals or clean, minimal shoes work well.
Watches: These can go either way. Many dads end up taking them off, but it’s completely up to personal preference.
Think Beyond The Session
One of my signature styling ideas — something you might notice if you look through my portfolio — is creating continuity between maternity photos and later family sessions.
Sometimes we tailor, shorten, or repurpose pieces from the maternity outfit so they can appear again in newborn or family photos later on.
It creates a beautiful sense of continuity when the images are displayed together as an elevated fine art gallery in your home.
For example, one mama wore yellow for her babymoon maternity session, along with a bespoke hāpai lei made entirely of yellow blooms.

When she returned for her newborn session, she wore a yellow crinkle silk dress with the same floral accents. Take a peek at her Maui Maternity Session At Ukumehame Beach.
For another mama, we turned her maternity dress into the cutest little bloomers for a baby’s first birthday photos!
Placed side by side, the images feel fine-art and seamless. The same story — just a new chapter.
Styling Support & Final Thoughts
This ended up being a long guide because “What should I wear?” is easily the most common question I receive from babymoon clients after they book their maternity session. There’s simply so much I want to share to help the experience feel easy, relaxed, and enjoyable.
Choosing the right wardrobe becomes much easier when you’re working with someone who understands Maui’s landscapes, light, and weather. As a Maui maternity photographer, I guide clients through styling choices based on location, wind, color palette, and the overall feeling they want their images to express.
Many babymoon clients also add styling support, wardrobe pieces from my client closet, and custom floral lei designed specifically for their session.
Whether you’re gathering Maui babymoon outfit ideas, looking for maternity photo inspiration, or simply wondering what to wear for maternity photos in Maui, the goal isn’t to follow a trend or get everything perfectly “right.” The goal is to create something that feels like you — styled intentionally in a way that fits the landscape.
If you’d rather skip the planning entirely, you can add my signature styling service to your session and I’ll take care of everything for you. You can learn more about working with a Maui maternity photographer on my Maui maternity photography page.
And no matter what you wear, these photos will always be meaningful.
I hope to see you on Maui soon.
