ISLAND SESSIONS & STORIES

Looking at these photos, you can almost smell the honey-sweet pua kenikeni and feel that last stretch of warm sunset light and the soft ocean breeze. These images bring back the quiet, grounded energy of this maternity session at Ukumehame Beach, a place that feels worlds away from the busy resorts.

This mama came to me with inspiration images for her babymoon session that were carefree, sun-soaked, and connected to the earth. She was expecting a baby boy and wanted the experience to feel intentional but effortless. Not overly styled. Not posed. Just golden and joyful.

That’s exactly what we built.

While many visitors stick to the manicured beaches of Kāʻanapali or Lahaina, I suggested the rugged, quiet beauty of this West Side coastline.

Why Ukumehame Beach is Perfect for Maui Babymoon Photos

Most people drive right past Ukumehame on the Honoapiʻilani Highway as they head toward Lahaina, but for Maui maternity photos, it’s one of my absolute favorites. It’s quieter and less busy than the resort stretches. The weathered driftwood creates these romantic, dramatic backdrops, and there’s a wide strip of golden sand against a deep blue ocean that just feels expansive.

The shoreline here is always shifting with the surf, so I make sure to scout the coast before a session. The driftwood and little patches of greenery form these natural “rooms” right on the sand, giving us privacy without any hiking or climbing.

The parking lot is right there and the terrain is flat—which really matters when you’re in your third trimester. Unlike the more crowded West Maui beaches where photography permits can be tricky or the sand is packed with umbrellas, Ukumehame Beach gives us space to breathe.

Styling The Session: Maternity Wardrobe & The Hāpai Lei

For my styled maternity sessions, I love to help coordinate everything from the location to the color palette. For this session, we leaned into yellow and white because they play so beautifully with the West Maui sunset light. Yellow is just joyful. It catches those golden rays without being loud.

For her first look, she wore a macramé swimsuit paired with her own golden jewelry. I always encourage incorporating pieces you already love. It makes the photos feel more honest and personal.

If wardrobe feels overwhelming, I break down what photographs best in Dressing for Your Maui Babymoon Session.

The centerpiece of the vision was her custom luxury hāpai lei. In Hawaiian tradition, maternity lei are left open at the ends to symbolize the open pathway of birth and new life. As part of the styling for this session, we sourced a lei made entirely of yellow Maui floralsʻŌhai Aliʻiplumeria, and incredibly fragrant pua kenikeni. The scent was beautiful and felt so rooted in this landscape.

Full Circle: The West Maui Newborn Session

What made this story even more meaningful is that we returned to this exact spot for her newborn session.

To keep the feeling consistent, I sourced a flowing silk crepe dress in those same yellow tones for her, and we brought in matching Maui florals pinned into her hair. Holding her baby boy in those same driftwood pockets, under that deep West Side sunset light, created a beautiful continuity between her pregnancy and early motherhood.

I love when families choose to document both seasons in the same landscape. It tells a much fuller story and makes for such beautiful home galleries.

FAQ: Planning Your West Maui Maternity Session

What is the best beach for maternity photos near Lahaina or Kāʻanapali?

While many mamas look for spots directly in Lahaina or Kāʻanapali, professional photography is actually restricted on many of those resort stretches. My two absolute favorites on the West Side require a short, scenic drive. To the north, I love Ironwoods Beach for its epic white cliffs and sweeping views. To the south, I always suggest Ukumehame Beach. The trade-off for the 15-minute drive to Ukumehame is privacy, dramatic driftwood, and a much more peace than you’ll find in the busy hotel zones.

How does Ukumehame compare to Ironwoods Beach? (Oneloa Bay)

Ironwoods (Oneloa Bay) is famous for its white sand and epic cliffs, and it is undeniably beautiful. However, it can be very busy with multiple photo sessions happening at once, and the wind can be intense. I love Ironwoods for certain looks, but I have a few “special pockets” on the West Side that offer that same dramatic energy with half the crowds.

Is Ukumehame Beach easy to access while pregnant?

Yes! This is one of the biggest pluses for a Maui babymoon session. Unlike some cliffside spots that require a hike, the parking lot at Ukumehame is right next to the sand. The terrain is flat and easy to navigate, which really matters when you’re in your third trimester and want to move at a slower “pregnancy pace.”

Do you provide the hāpai lei for the session?

As part of my styled maternity sessions, I help coordinate everything from the color palette to the florals. I source custom, luxury hāpai lei from local Maui ateliers using traditional florals like pua kenikeni and ʻŌhai Aliʻi. We choose the flowers to specifically match your wardrobe and the golden West Maui light.

Do I need to worry about crowds for my babymoon session?

In the main resort areas, yes. But my goal is always to find you “space to breathe.” Whether we choose the driftwood “rooms” at Ukumehame or one of my hidden spots near Kapalua, I prioritize locations where we can move slowly and focus on your connection to your baby without an audience.

Should we stay on the West Side or South Side for our babymoon?

Both have their perks! I personally prefer South Side (Wailea, Kihei, Makena) for their wider beaches and because they are less cut off from the island. I’ve broken down the pros and cons in my Planning a Maui Babymoon: Everything You Need to Know (Including Healthcare).

Planning Your Maui Westside Session

Ukumehame is one of those places I keep coming back to for maternity sessions. It’s quiet, dramatic, and still feels wild in a natural way. It does require someone who knows how the sand moves with the surf, but when it all comes together, it’s so beautiful.
