And yes, Maui has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world! In fact, Kāʻanapali Beach, Kapalua Bay, Wailea Beach, Hāmoa Beach, and D.T. Fleming Beach Park: have all been ranked among the best globally many times. But none of these beaches is ideal for maternity photography!
After 14 years as a maternity photographer, and years of photographing babymoon sessions across the island, I’ve learned something most visitors don’t realize:
The difference between a good location and the right one for photography isn’t just how it looks. It’s how the sand, wind, greenery, and crowds all come together, and how that shapes the entire experience.
Three Things About Maui Beaches That Most People Don’t Realize
There are a few things that often surprise people when choosing the right beach on Maui.
1. Beach Color Changes the Entire Look
Maui’s beaches come in a surprising range of colors. Some are pale and ashen, others golden, soft gray, charcoal, or even deep red.
The look changes dramatically depending on where you go. Some beaches feel soft and airy, while others feel bold and dramatic.
2. Wind Shapes the Experience
Some beaches are naturally more exposed, while others are protected by lava rock, cliffs, or surrounding landscape.
This makes a big difference, not just in comfort, but in how your photos feel. Some sessions feel soft and still, while others feel more dynamic and windswept.
3. Privacy Matters More Than You Expect
This is something I didn’t fully appreciate until my own rainforest maternity session on Maui.
Not feeling watched allowed me to settle into the moment, to focus less on how I looked, and more on what this season meant.

Even here, while I’m sharing some of my favorite locations by name, there are still quieter pockets and lesser-known stretches I keep in mind for clients. Little nooks and pockets that stay especially peaceful depending on the time of day and season.

Baldwin Beach, North Shore Maui
This is the beach I recommend when couples ask about getting in the water, floating, or finding a more private spot on the North Shore. I usually suggest sunrise maternity sessions for this spot. Here’s why…
First, it’s called Baby Beach for a reason. This is where a lot of North Shore mamas bring their little ones for their first ocean dips. We did too with our youngest, and she loves it here.
Because of a natural lava rock shelf offshore, the water forms a protected ocean pool that stays calm even when the rest of the ocean is rougher. The entry is shallow and gradual, which makes it one of the easiest places to actually get into the water.
That’s why if you’re hoping for maternity photos in the water, this is one of the best spots for it.
In terms of privacy, the beach is long and open, so you have space to move without feeling crowded. It’s one of those places where you can just walk, pause, and let things unfold naturally.
Now why sunrise sessions here? Mornings are typically calm, while by afternoon the trade winds pick up. On the North Shore, that can get intense quickly. We’ve come here ready to swim and turned around because we were getting sandblasted. It’s hard to feel relaxed or connected in those conditions.
Also, one of the most special parts of this beach is the turtles! You might see one resting along the shore or moving quietly through the water as you walk, and it brings a natural, unplanned moment into the session that you can’t really recreate anywhere else.

- A peaceful, tucked-away feeling
Baby Beach Point, North Shore Maui
If you’re drawn to red sand beach photos on Maui, you really have two options. The one from all the guidebooks on the Road to Hana, and this one on the North Shore.
A quick note on the Road to Hana red sand beach: I would never photograph a maternity or family session there. Yes, it’s beautiful, but getting there requires crossing private property and navigating narrow, slippery cliffside paths with the ocean below. There used to be a rope in parts because of how treacherous it is. Accidents happened here, often. Personally, I wouldn’t even take my own kids there.
This North Shore location is a much better option.
Technically, it’s not sand but red soil rich in iron oxide, but it has that deep Maui red that looks incredible against the blue ocean, the green palms, and even the West Maui Mountains in the distance. The whole place feels raw and untamed.
There’s also naupaka growing along the shoreline, which adds texture and contrast and makes the landscape feel even more distinct.
The best: it’s close to parking, flat, and accessible. That matters more than people realize. Not just for comfort, but because it allows me to move more freely, which directly improves the flow and variety of your photos.
I love this spot and come here with my own family as well. As a Maui beach maternity photographer, I find it’s perfect for a look that feels a little different: more bold, more textured, and less like the typical golden sand look.
Because it’s on the North Shore, I usually recommend sunrise. By afternoon, the trade winds can pick up and make it feel like we’re fighting the wind.

Palauea Beach (White Rock), South Maui
This is one of the cleanest and most minimal beaches in South Maui. It’s the one I recommend when couples want that classic Maui look: golden sand, palms, and ocean without distractions.
One of the biggest challenges with beaches on Maui is that you often have hotels or condos in the frame. You’ll have beautiful light, sand, and waves, and then buildings right behind it. It’s not as intense as Oʻahu, but it still takes away from the overall feel.
Here, you walk just past the resort areas and everything opens up. No buildings, no distractions—just palms, sand, and ocean. It also tends to be a little quieter since it’s slightly removed from the main hotel access points.
It’s one of the few places where you can turn in almost any direction and still have a clean, uninterrupted frame.
At sunset, the light wraps softly across the sand and through the palms, creating a timeless, natural look. Sometimes it almost feels unreal.
This beach photographs beautifully for maternity sessions where simplicity, light, and clean composition are the focus.
Best for:
- Clean horizon lines without buildings
- Classic golden sand Maui scenery
- Soft, timeless sunset images
Mokapu Beach, South Maui
This is one of my favorite beaches to recommend. It’s also one of the most versatile locations in South Maui.
You start along a palm-lined path and boardwalk, then step out onto golden sand framed by lava rock and ocean. There are small lava tide pools, a curved stretch of beach that can feel almost like a lagoon, and areas of driftwood that look sculptural. Within just a few steps, the entire scene changes.
The landscaping has a resort feel in the best way, tropical and elevated, without the hotel look.
It works especially well for maternity sessions where you want variety without needing to change locations. You can move from lush greenery to open shoreline to textured rock in just a few minutes.
This location photographs beautifully at sunset, especially for sessions that blend a tropical feel with clean, natural beach imagery.
It’s also very convenient, right along the Wailea Beach Path and close to the Andaz, so access is easy without sacrificing the look.
Best for:
- Variety of backdrops in one location
- Tropical landscaping and palms
- Easy, accessible sessions
Oneuli Beach, South Maui
This is one of the most striking and unexpected beaches on Maui.
Instead of golden sand, you’re standing on a dark volcanic shoreline, with red cliffs rising behind you and bright turquoise water in front.
Most people assume you have to drive all the way to Hāna to see a black sand beach—or to take maternity photos on one—but you don’t.
This is a much more accessible option.
Behind the beach, there’s a cinder cone and tall cliffs of black and deep red, formed by one of Maui’s more recent lava flows in the late 1700s. It’s part of the La Perouse lava field, which is why everything here feels so raw and untouched.
This is not a soft, romantic beach. It’s bold, graphic, and incredibly distinctive on camera.
Because the landscape is so strong, simple styling works best here. Flowing fabrics and neutral tones allow the contrast of black sand, red earth, and blue ocean to stand out. You can find more ideas in my guide on what to wear for Maui maternity photos.
Maternity photography at Oneuli Beach creates images that feel artistic and different from Maui’s typical beach look.
Best for:
- Dramatic volcanic scenery
- High-contrast imagery
- Couples who want something unique
Ironwoods Beach, West Side
This is one of the most unique beach landscapes on Maui, and one I often recommend to couples staying on the Westside.
There are really two levels to this beach, which gives me a lot to work with as a photographer. I usually start us along the boardwalk, then move out onto the elevated white sand dunes where you have wide, open views of the ocean below.
What I love most about this spot is the perspective. You’re not approaching the ocean at sea level—you’re above it. You see more sky, more horizon, more openness, and it creates a very different feeling in the photos.
At sunset, the dunes catch warm light and everything starts to glow.
From there, we can walk down to the beach itself and do the traditional beach maternity photos.
One thing to note, there are no palms here, just ironwood trees. This creates a landscape that is more windswept and coastal, almost like needle trees. It’s not tropical, which is important to know because it changes the mood of the whole location.
Sessions here tend to feel open and airy, with a point of view that’s hard to find at other Maui beaches.
Best for:
- Elevated ocean views and big skies
- Sand dunes and golden light
- A unique Maui landscape
Ukumehame Beach, West Side
This is one of the quietest and most understated beaches on the west side. It’s a bit of a hidden spot I come back to often.
What I really like here is how naturally private it feels. There are almost little “rooms” along the shoreline created by sculptural driftwood and pockets of greenery. It’s surprising, especially since it’s right off the road, but once you step onto the beach, it feels tucked away.
The driftwood and greenery also give me a lot to work with in terms of natural framing, texture, and variety without needing to move far.
If you like the idea of swimsuit photos but feel a little shy, this is one of the spots I recommend. It gives you space and privacy in a way that’s hard to find on most Maui beaches.
You also have a wide, open view of the ocean, which keeps the overall feeling expansive while still intimate.
The color of the sand is flattering as well. It’s a soft, pale golden tone, which is different from many beaches along this stretch that lean more ashen or gray and don’t photograph as well.
Sessions here tend to feel calm, quiet, and removed from everything else.

- Quiet, uncrowded beach sessions
- Driftwood textures and natural framing
- Quiet, private beach setting
Choosing The Right Beach For Your Maui Maternity Photos
One of the most beautiful things about Maui is how different each beach can feel.
Some are calm and protected. Others feel wild and expansive. Some are easy and accessible, while others are tucked away and private.
The best location isn’t just about what looks beautiful. It’s about how you want your session to feel.
When I work with couples, I help them choose a beach based on light, comfort, privacy, and the kind of experience they want to have.
Some couples want to wander barefoot along a quiet shoreline or maybe cuddle together for a sunset picnic. Others are drawn to dramatic waves or bold volcanic scenery.

FAQ: Maui Beach Maternity Photo Locations
Yes. Professional photography on many beaches in Hawaii requires a permit, but it’s not something you will have to worry about. As your photographer, I handle the permitting process where required. The fees are included in your booking fee.
Not every beach allows commercial photography. For example, Kaanapali Beach does not allow it. I always recommend and choose locations that are permitted, appropriate, and safe.
I love adventurous maternity sessions and am up for it. However, it also depends on location and conditions. If you’d like to get some in-water photos, do let me know when you’re booking, so I can make recommendations. Some beaches are calm and protected, while others are better suited for shoreline photos only.
It depends. We might have to adjust the location. Maui has beaches facing different directions, so we can often find calmer beaches elsewhere.

South Maui tends to have the calmest water and golden sand beaches, which are ideal for relaxed sunset sessions. What To Wear For Maui Beach Maternity Photos
