If you’re dreaming of red sand beach maternity photos in Maui for your babymoon, you’re probably picturing the one in Hana.

When you search for red sand beach Maui, that’s the location that comes up again and again.
It’s beautiful. A secluded cove with towering red cliffs, turquoise water, and a landscape that feels completely different from the rest of the island. It’s one of the most striking places on Maui.
But it’s not a location I recommend for maternity photos.
The access trail crosses private property and follows a narrow cliffside path with loose gravel underfoot. There used to be a rope in parts to help people across more exposed sections. People have slipped there, and falls onto the rocks and ocean below have happened.

For a pregnant mama, it’s not worth the risk. It’s not even a place I would take my own family.
Red sand beach maternity photos in Maui usually refer to the Hana location, but there are safer alternatives that offer a similar look.
If you’re planning your session and weighing different locations, I break this down further in Best Maui Maternity Photo Locations (Beyond the Beach) and how to choose what actually works.
Is There a Safe Red Sand Beach For Maternity Photos On Maui?
Yes, there are locations on Maui where you can get a similar red sand beach look without going to Hana.
There’s a spot on Maui’s North Shore that gives you a similar look: red shoreline, bright blue waves, even palms and views toward the West Maui Mountains, but without the risk.

It’s safe, quiet, and just a five-minute walk from parking.
That’s the location we chose for this maternity session.
This is one of the best ways to get red sand beach maternity photos on Maui without going to Hana.

It’s one of those places that only works when you know exactly where to go and how to use it, which is a big part of what I guide for my clients.
If you’re looking for a Maui maternity photographer who can guide location, styling, and timing like this, I’d love to help you.
What Red Sand Looks Like In Photos (And Why It Matters)
Red sand photographs differently than the lighter, golden beaches most people picture on Maui.
It doesn’t reflect light in the same way. The color is stronger, more contrasty, and if it’s not handled carefully, it can cast unwanted tones onto skin and wardrobe.

That changes how I approach both styling and photographing sessions on Maui’s red and black sand beaches. From where I place you in the light to how color is handled in-camera and in editing, everything has to be more intentional.
The goal is to keep the richness of the landscape while still letting you feel clear, natural, and luminous in the frame.
What to Wear For Red Sand Beach Maternity Photos On Maui
I approach wardrobe a little differently at red sand locations.
The landscape is already strong with rich color, deep contrast, a lot happening visually, so what you wear needs to bring balance.

I tend to guide toward soft neutrals first. Creams, warm whites, and subtle earth tones keep everything feeling clean while letting the red shoreline and blue water stay vibrant. I especially love natural textures here, like gauze, textured cotton, flowing silk, soft ripples, even crochet. Anything that moves and catches light without feeling heavy.
That said, deeper tones can work beautifully when chosen intentionally. Fresh greens, or more saturated, gemstone tones, like emerald, deep teal, sapphire, garnet, or amethyst, can hold their own in this kind of setting without getting lost.

If you’re deciding between options, I go deeper into this in What to Wear for Your Maui Maternity Photos, and how wardrobe changes depending on location.
Styling this North Shore Maui Maternity Session
For this session, we chose a rich silk dress in a deep berry tone with a rust lace accent that mirrored the landscape colors. The color combination held its own against the landscape without competing with it, and the silk caught the wind in a way that added movement without feeling overly styled.
She stayed barefoot in the red sand, which felt important for her.

The rust-colored sand on her feet wasn’t something to clean up or avoid. It became part of the image. For her, that connection to the earth is part of her spiritual practice, something grounding and connected.
It made the whole session feel more intentional.
The Naupaka Lei
Naupaka grows naturally along the shoreline here, with delicate white flowers that look like halves—two together forming a whole.
To tie that into the look, we added a naupaka haku lei, custom made that morning by Leila of Lei Atelier.

Naupaka is a delicate plant and doesn’t last long once picked, so the lei had to be made the same day using freshly harvested flowers.
There’s a Hawaiʻi folk story often told as one of separation—two halves of a flower that grow apart, one by the ocean and one in the mountains.

But here, it felt more like completion. Two parts coming together to create something whole, like two people creating new life.
Hair and Makeup for North Shore Maui Conditions
There’s often more wind, more texture, and less shelter on the North shore of Maui.
Because of that, either very slick, minimal, and modern hair or natural, loose, and open hair tend to work best.

For this session, her hair was left open, which can sometimes be tricky in the wind. But the haku lei actually helped hold it in place, keeping it softly out of her face without needing to control it too much.
Makeup stayed understated and luminous. Just enough to hold up against the stronger light and color, without taking away from the natural, raw feeling of the setting.

A Different Kind of Maui Beach Maternity Shoot
This session felt peaceful, but not in a soft and dreamy way.
There’s movement here with the ocean, the wind, the texture of the shoreline, all full of power. Still her feet in the red Maui soil and her heart and mind so focused inward, created something more grounded and raw.

We walked, paused, she meditated and breathed. No rigid posing, no rushing.
Just some time to reflect and be present.
